April 12, 2012 – The Structural Insulated Panel Association (SIPA) recognized nine homes and commercial buildings that demonstrate the high levels of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability achievable with SIP construction during the 2012 Building Excellence Awards ceremony, held at the SIPA Annual Meeting & Roundup in San Antonio, Texas. Earning the Honorable Mention Award in the category of Single Family Homes over 3,000 sq. ft. was a home built by The Chuba Company, Elk River, MN. The Newman Residence, designed by Mackey-Malin Architects features Enercept Structural Insulated Wall Panels manufactured in Watertown, SD.

In addition to the energy efficient Enercept wall panels the home uses a Vertical loop geothermal HVAC system with energy recovery ventilator and humidistat, solar generation, a Thermomass foundation, and spray foam roof insulation. The overall energy performance has been tested and earned a Home Energy Rating Score (HERS) Index of 7, indicating that the home is 93% more energy efficient than a typical home.

Enercept has been manufacturing structural insulated panels for 30 years; The Chuba Company is an Independent Dealer for Enercept. This is the 10th year that SIPA has been recognizing SIP builders and manufacturers with the Building Excellence Awards.

Enercept Structural Insulated Panels for all your Agricultural Buildings and Structures.

Need a super-insulated, energy efficient structure to store and work on your machinery, vehicles or other equipment?

With Enercept super-insulated SIP panels you’ll spend less money heating your structure so you can invest more money on the big boy ‘toys’ you want and need.

Need something larger? No problem ….

From a small garage or hobby barn to a mega turkey production building, an Enercept Structural Insulated Ag Building is the answer. Benefit from the same advantages of an Enercept SIP home; a structure that is stronger, faster to build and more energy efficient.

Enercept SIPs are excellent for use in these and other applications:

Breeding & Gestation Buildings

Farrowing Barns

Finishing Buildings

Isolation Barns

Poultry Barns

Milking Parlors

Livestock Confinement

Enercept manufactures structural insulated panels (SIPs) for floor, wall, and roof applications in all types of agricultural buildings. Enercept panels are made of a solid core of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam laminated between two sheets of sheathing. Sheathing type depends upon the building application. Generally, glassboard/oriented strand board (OSB) is used as the interior sheathing and OSB is used as the exterior sheathing in livestock and poultry confinement buildings. Enercept uses a standard 2x stud as a tongue and groove panel connecting member for ag panels. Our EPS is 4.2 R’s per inch at 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Enercept manufactures blank panels or custom designed panels. Window, vent, and door openings are cut and framed with dimensional lumber installed at the factory, saving the builder time and reducing job site waste.

The durability and ease of construction with Enercept SIPs makes them the building material of choice for the agricultural market.

Span widths up to 120′ with Enercept SIPs and Ultra Span laminated beams.

The Fight Against Moisture

Enercept understands that moisture control is a main concern in livestock and poultry confinement buildings due to the high humidity within the enclosure. The natural rigidity and density of expanded polystyrene (foam) gives it a much greater ability to resist moisture than fiberglass insulation. Fiberglass insulation acts like a sponge absorbing moisture. The weight of the wet insulation pulls it down to the bottom of the stud cavity leaving large un-insulated gaps in the wall. As little as 1% moisture content reduces fiberglass’s R-value by 50%. The wet fiberglass compounds the problem by rotting the surrounding sheathing and studs resulting in declining structural integrity. With the Enercept System, you can take care of your hogs while your barn takes care of itself.

Hobby Farm

Large or small, Enercept is still the better building solution.

Building small barns, shops and storage buildings is made easy with Enercept SIPs. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by the speed and ease of construction. Less time building will give you more time to enjoy your new shop or hobby center. Our solid core insulation will keep you comfortable and save you money all year long. We promise that you’ll get the same great quality, features and commitment from Enercept no matter what size your project is.

SIP Project Case Study: Terry Redlin Art Center

The Redlin Art Center showcases the paintings of world-renowned wildlife artist Terry Redlin. The architect, who is also Terry’s son, Charles Redlin, chose SIPs because panels prevent air infiltration, which is an important factor in preserving the Terry Redlin paintings.

“From the time I proposed a wood to steel structure, I knew I was going to use structural insulated panels for curtain wall framing,” said Redlin. “SIPs are a wonderful way to insulate the structure and to tie the steel framing system to create a rigid final building.”

Enercept panels provide a fast and efficient enclosure system for timber frames and log homes. The Enercept drafting team designs each panel to coordinate with the timbers. Rough openings are cut to spec at the factory, further assisting the builder in the construction process.

“We at Glenville Timberwrights wish to send our heartiest “Thank You” to you, the Enercept design department, and the crew who built the panels for the Hays residence. Nice job! With each job,we feel more comfortable with your enclosure system.

I have really enjoyed working with you and the people in the design department, and it is obvious from the quality of your panels and the ease in which they fit together, that the production department is first class.

Congratulations to all of you for a job well done.”

Energy Star Certified Homes

ENERGY STAR Homes was created by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reduce residential energy consumption. To qualify for an ENERGY STAR rating, a home must be at least 15% more energy efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC) and include additional energy savings features that make the home 20% – 30% more efficient than standard homes.

Enercept SIP homes use an average of 50% less energy than conventionally framed homes.

The ENERGY STAR Homes program provides builders and homeowners with incentives to build more energy efficient homes. Incentives for homeowners include EEMs (energy efficient mortgages) and higher home resale value. Visit the Energy Star website for details.
