Celebrating 30 Years of Excellence
After years as an industrial arts teacher, superintendent and vocational high school director, Harold Henley, mortgaged his home to start Energy Industries in 1977.
The original plan was to distribute solar equipment for a Nebraska firm with his partner, Ron Walker. In October of the same year they began to manufacture Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) and in the spring of 1978 Energy Inc. took the place of Energy Industries.
Early manufacturing included mobile home skirting, board stock and commercial taper roof systems. In 1980 the Company diversified into custom packaging.
Enercept, a subsidiary business to Energy Inc. began manufacturing SIPs in 1981. The name ‘Enercept’ is the result of combining the words energy and concept.
By 1982, Enercept was incorporated and built a 26,000 sq. ft. facility of its own design and product at the current location of 3100 9th Avenue SE in Watertown, SD. A second building was constructed in the summer of 1984 to house Energy Inc. which later became a separate entity, Benchmark Foam.
In 1995 at 24,000 sq. ft. addition was built onto the south end of the Enercept building and a new state-of-the-art production line was put in to place. Mr. Henley sold Enercept to a group of investors in 1996.

Over the years, Enercept has been a leader in custom SIP manufacturing. What began as a one-size-fits-all system has evolved to a system that provides panels for the most complex designs imaginable.
In 2007, Enercept University was introduced to provide hands-on training for Enercept builders and independent dealers.
In 2010, Enercept developed a continuing education program for AIA members.
As Enercept begins its 30th year in the same location, plans are under way to add an additional 8,000 sq. ft. to its manufacturing facility. The additional space will house shipping and receiving along with storage for raw material and finished goods.
Equipment was purchased in December 2011. This equipment will allow Enercept to introduce a Jumbo Panel Line sometime this year.
Enercept looks forward to continued growth and has aligned itself with The Structural Insulated Panel Association (SIPA).
